Celebrate the 40th Birthday of a Movement
Saturday June 20th and
Saturday, June 27th,
10:00 am - 4:30 pm
One June 27, 1969 in Greenwich Village something very special happened.
It started with something that had happened many times before — police raiding a gay bar.
However, this
night did not end like the thousands of previous raids with patrons
being arrested and/or police receiving a pay-off, known back then as
"gayola." On this historic night customers at the Stonewall Bar
decided they would not go quietly into the paddy wagon and this
sparked what came to be known as the Stonewall Riots, a seminal incident
in the Gay Civil Rights Movement.
Come celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots by
exploring NYC's LGBT history and culture on this one-of-a-kind bike
tour! The price of the this tour includes a picnic lunch on the
scenic Hudson River pier, dubbed the "gay pier," catered by
KLEE
Brasserie*** AND a quick stop at
Pho Sure for an exotic Vietnamese snack known by some
cultures to be a cornerstone of male virility — Hey, when in Rome...!
This tour will meet on the Upper East Side, which will allow us to
explore a bit of Central Park, including the famed Roller Disco,
before riding straight down Broadway through Time Square! Throughout
Midtown, there are a number noteworthy stops tied to LGBT Culture
including Carnegie Hall, The Plaza Hotel, a number of Broadway venues,
Hell's Kitchen, Bryant Park, 42nd Street, and much much more!
Further south, we will have an opportunity to pedal into the Village
where we'll revisit the Christopher Street, one of the most notorious
in LGBT history, and the current Stonewall Bar. Throughout the
Village (East and West!), our explorations will uncover relics of LGBT nightlife dating
back to the late 1800s and reflect upon more contemporary gay culture in
the Big Apple.
After exploring the neighborhood of Chelsea, the ride will end with a
leisurely roll up the Hudson River Greenway, one of the most scenic
bike paths in the country.
Throughout the day, we'll be making stops for pictures and to discuss
history, culture, and those famous (and infamous!) in LGBT world such
as Bette Midler, J Edgar Hoover, Rupaul, Oscar Wilde, Rufus
Wainwright, Judy Garland, Ellen Degeneres, Allen Ginsberg, Walt
Whitman and many more!
This 6.5 hour tour will be held the last two Saturdays in June (June
20 and June 27th, the actual anniversary of the riots!) and will meet
at 10am. Advanced reservations required — space is limited! $95
includes bikes, helmets, licensed tour guides, lunch and snack.
